Hodder Education Reading Planet Key Stages 1 and 2

Project management of new illustrated reading scheme books

This project was the first time I had worked on titles in which illustrations were so central. The eight KS1 titles and six KS2 titles (fiction and non-fiction) meant I worked with nine authors as well as the publishing team, copyeditors and proofreaders to deliver these beautiful books ready for the new academic year.

"I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Estelle on several projects over the years and I can honestly say there’s nothing better then knowing your project is going to a safe pair of hands. From maths textbooks to Reading Planet levelled books, Estelle has a wealth of knowledge, she’s a proactive problem solver, calm under pressure and truly an excellent project manager."

Amy Tyrer, Editorial Project Manager

Galore Park Common Entrance 13+ Core Maths

Project management of a complex textbook, including the design challenges of setting out mathematical content

I managed freelancers, distributed proofs and collated comments, and communicated with the offshore typesetter, as well as working with another project manager to maintain consistency with the Additional Maths title, which was being produced at the same time.

Hodder Cambridge Checkpoint Lower Secondary English

Project management of student books, workbooks and teacher guides for Stages 7, 8 and 9

This project involved the staggered development of nine different elements, which went through the Cambridge International Assessment endorsement process. When the first stage encountered problems, the schedule for the whole project was delayed. The final title was published, with persistence and determination by the whole team, over two years after the project began.

"Estelle is my go-to freelancer! I have worked with her for over eight years on educational content including Student’s Books for the IB and digital material for Cambridge International. Her project management, copyediting and proofreading skills are exceptional and it is always a pleasure working with her. She is always willing to help and is incredibly patient and flexible. I would recommend Estelle any day of the week!"

Emilie Kerton, formerly Project Editor, International, Hodder

York Press Primary Science for Nigeria

Writing educational content

Using the Nigerian Basic Science and Technology curriculum as a structure, I wrote content for primary-level science student books and corresponding workbooks and teacher books, ensuring I covered the content in a culturally appropriate way, as well as making the content accessible for the relevant age group and for learners and teachers for whom English is not their first language.

Online articles for IB Middle Years Programme and IGCSE Biology

Editing content to fit an online template

Taking the authors’ documents, I separated them into individual articles to fit within a character limit, which I then edited and added tags to so the content could be dropped into the content management system. I also found images from photo libraries, created image lists, communicated directly with the authors to resolve queries and kept the client updated on progress throughout.

“I worked with Estelle on a complex International Baccalaureate project that had a demanding schedule. Estelle demonstrated her ability to work with the project effectively and efficiently, clearly determined to achieve the very best end product possible.

I enjoyed working with Estelle, as she is a consummate professional, and I would have no hesitation in recommending Estelle wholeheartedly.”

Juliet Smith, Director, Severn Publishing Services Ltd

Schofield and Sims Primary Practice: English, Reception to Year 6

Copyediting seven titles for the home/tuition market

These practice books and their corresponding answers cover grammar, punctuation, spelling and comprehension. As well as the usual checks for sense, clarity and accuaracy, I added mark-up to Word documents to prepare the content for typesetting, ensured consistency throughout the series and made sure the mechanism for answering each question was included, such as answer lines of the correct length or tick boxes.

Rising Stars Assessment

Progress in Reading Assessment (PiRA); Progress in Understanding Maths Assessment (PUMA); Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Progress Tests

I have worked on Rising Stars Assessment titles both as a project manager and as an editor. These materials always require careful attention to the layout, answer scoring, and to the phrasing of questions and answers. I have also been involved in checking data for standardised scores to support the assessment materials.
